“The Caribbean”, Collins, Lefebvre, Stoneberger Gallery

Emilio Sanchez

The Collins, Lefebvre, Stoneberger Gallery is pleased to announce Emilio Sanchez - The Caribbean,” the first solo exhibition by master Cuban-born American artist, Emilio Sanchez in Canada. A selection of paintings, watercolors and lithographs highlight the artist’s fascination with Caribbean architectural themes.

As an artist committed to walking the line between naturalism and abstraction Sanchez is well known for his treatment of architectural motifs. His work emphasizes the pure forms of buildings, facades, and exterior architectural elements in the sunlight. He focuses symbolically on the skin of the structure, on the boundary between the inside and the outside, where form becomes manifest by light and shadow. In an effort to simplify and universalize visual form Sanchez flattens his structures into strict geometric elevations that vary from symmetric to oblique perspective views. A wonderful play of forms with color invite the viewer to investigate the facade as well as the landscape alluded to in the distance.

Sanchez was born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1921-1999. He began his formal training at the Art Students League and the Columbia University Art School both in New York City where he moved permanently in 1952. An artist with an independent voice and international acclaim, Sanchez has had over sixty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group shows in major museums and galleries around the world. His works are in many private and public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogota, Colombia, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas, Venezuela and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
