“3 Views of Abstraction”, New Arts Gallery

Fanny Sanín

Fanny Sanin’s paintings transcend the obvious elements of geometry and color to create spacial relationships that form a definitive sense of place. Her imagined worlds are masterfully composed. Converging lines, retinal color fields, meticulous application of paint all contribute to Sanin’s visual experience.

Merrill Wagner’s paintings on steel seem both organic as well as deliberately composed. Wagner exploits the surface of her underlying material. She applies rust preventative paint revealing and obscuring the oxidizing metal beneath. While austere, these works are earthy almost having the appearance of a natural occurrence but with signs of human intervention.

David Colbert also works with metal and paint. These wall pieces are combinations of implied and actual elements. His 3 dimensional metal components interact with the available light to cast critical shadows that upon first look have the appearance of painted surfaces but are transitory. His selection of color and their interaction are central to the ethereal nature of these painted aluminum works.

These artists have 3 distinct approaches to their common interest of viewing the world in terms of abstract concepts and interpretation. Each creates a visual experience that is both vital and personal.
